Following your flight to the Hungarian capital, Budapest, you will be transferred, with this assistance of an AmaWaterways representative to the banks of the Danube where you board your luxury AmaWaterways cruise ship - home for the next 7 nights. This evening you will be welcomed by a cocktail reception as you meet the Captain and crew. After some time to settle into your cabin, dinner is served tonight in the on board dining room as the ship sets sail for Slovakia.
Enjoy a leisurely morning spent relaxing and exploring the AmaCerto. After lunch, you'll arrive into Bratislava for a guided walking tour of the city. Located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Bratislava straddles The Danube which neatly divides the city into two parts; the Old Town (Stare Mesto) and the new city. They will also be some free time allowing you to further explore the Baroque streets, Gothic town hall and Rococo museums. Back on board, the AmaCerto begins its journey to Vienna.
Relish Austria's Imperial history today as you tour Vienna, one of the great European capitals. Full of tradition and rich in architectural, artistic and musical heritage, you'll see many of Vienna's finest ornate buildings, including the impressive Hofburg Palace. This vast complex of buildings demonstrates the awesome power and wealth commanded by the Habsburgs. You'll also take in the impressive Opera House, one of the leading opera venues in the world, as well as the grand Parliament Building and famous Spanish Riding School. Your afternoon is then at leisure for more sightseeing.
Continue upriver to Dürnstein today, an idyllic village in Austria's renowned wine-producing, Wachau region. Once your ship has moored, there are three excursions available for you to choose from. You might like to head out on a walking tour through the cobbled streets once trod by Napoleon and his advancing army, climb up to the ruins of Kuenringerburg, the site of Richard the Lionheart's 1193 imprisonment, or indulge with a tasting of some local sweet treats. After lunch back on board, grab a window seat for an impressive scenic performance as you cruise through Wachau Valley to Melk. Alternatively, join a guided bike tour along the river's edge. Once in Melk, make a visit to the glorious Benedictine Abbey and be guided around the prestigious Marble Room and the Abbey Church, generally considered one of the most beautiful Baroque churches north of the Alps.
Docking into Passau this morning, you can enjoy a guided walking or cycling tour of this delightful town, situated on the Austrian border and dominated by the Veste Oberhaus. This castle, which has never been conquered by military force, offers commanding views of the mighty river and rolling countryside, and a second optional excursion includes a walk up to its summit.
The medieval town of Regensburg is your destination for today, home to a notable number of historic structures spanning in style from Roman to Gothic. During your time here you could take a tour of the city's architectural highlights, including St Peter's Church. With its impressive stained glass windows from the middle ages, it is the greatest Gothic cathedral in Bavaria and took over 600 years to build. Otherwise, settle down to a tasting of some traditional specialities such as sausage, beer and pretzels, or set off on a bicycle ride to Walhalla, taking in the spectacular landscapes of the Danube Valley
Cross the continental Divide this morning, the point at which the Rhine and Danube separate to begin their transformations into the North and Black Seas, as the ship travels to Nuremberg. Along the way, you'll also cruise through the Altmühl Valley, one of the most visually sensational areas in Bavaria. Boasting panoramas of colossal limestone cliff faces, dainty riverside villages and layers of thick foliage climbing up to the sky, this relaxing stretch of your cruise will leave you feeling refreshed for your next excursion. Once in Nuremberg, you have a choice of escorted tours to pick from. Uncover the city's medieval history, take in famous sites from the Second World War, such as the Justice Palace and the Reich Party Congress Grounds, or delight in the authentic Franconian flavours of the famed bratwurst, Rot bier and lebkuchen. Tonight is your final evening on board the AmaCerto, and you mark the occasion with an elegant farewell dinner.
After a buffet breakfast, your cruise comes to an end and you disembark your ship in Nuremberg. You are transferred to the airport in time for your flight back to the UK.
