Flowing from northern Spain to the ocean in Porto, the Douro River carves a route through a rolling landscape of vineyards, gorges and villages. From vibrant Porto, you embark on a magnificent 8-day cruise enjoying Port wine tastings at renowned plantations, visits to historic Portuguese cities and excursions into Spain as well as an on board Flamenco performance.
Arrive at the airport today for your flight from London to Porto. On arrival, transfer by coach to your ship, the excellent AmaVida. Once settled in, enjoy a drinks reception in which you are introduced to the captain and the crew, before dinner later tonight. Your ship remains docked in Porto overnight.
The AmaVida spends today cruising down the enchanting Douro River. One of the largest of the Iberian rivers, the Douro tracks through some magnificent scenery, past fruitful vineyards and forest valleys. This afternoon, you arrive into Régua, one of the capitals of wine production across the Douro Valley.
From here, your first option is to pay a visit to nearby Lamego. The highlight here is the beautiful Nossa Senhora dos Remédios shrine which boasts a glorious staircase of 700 steps, all lovingly decorated with blue and white tiles. You have free time here. Your second option gives you the opportunity to sample several local delicacies including Presunto ham and sparkling Portuguese wine known as Espumante. Later this evening, you take an excursion to a wine museum in Régua which details the extraordinary wine culture of this region. Tonight, relax at dinner with other passengers as the ship continues along The gentle Douro on its way to Barca d'Alva.
This morning, perhaps take in the remarkable natural beauty of the Douro River from the lounge or sun deck. Then later this afternoon, your excursion takes you to the rural village of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. Found on a hilltop amongst the spectacular scenery, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo boasts some impressive ancient walls and even more memorable views. Enjoy a tour here, seeing the Chafariz dos Pretos fountain and sampling some delectable local produce. The AmaVida docks in Barca d'Alva tonight.
Today sees you venture out of Barca d'Alva for an all-day excursion into Spain, to historical Salamanca. A city of romantic architecture and serious academic prowess, Salamanca has a long history as one of the major Spanish cities. Your time here sees you take a guided tour of the sandstone buildings. You reunite with your ship later on and, back on board, you enjoy an authentic Flamenco show before dinner. There are few dances as passionate or as fiery as the Flamenco - originating from the south of Spain in Andalucía, it features a guitar backing and magnificent outfits of classic Spanish design. The ship sails on to Vega Terron where it docks overnight.
Spend this morning on board as you continue through the Portuguese landscapes to Pinhao, one of the world's leading Port producing towns with breathtaking views across its valley. On arrival, your excursion is a highlight of the cruise. You pay a visit to one of the biggest names in Portuguese Port culture, the distinguished vineyards of Quinta de Roeda. The main estate of the prestigious Croft Port Company since 1889, this vineyard produces some of the best Port wine in the world. You taste some of these exceptional vintages during your lunch here. After dinner tonight on board, your ship makes the return journey to Régua.
On arrival back into Régua, you have a choice of three excursions. Your first option is a visit to the majestic Palacio de Mateus, a charming Baroque mansion set amongst tranquil fountains and verdant gardens in the Trás-os-Montes region of Portugal. Your second choice is a visit to Quinta da Pacheca wine centre, where you enjoy a picnic against the stunning backdrop of the winding Douro River, while the third option takes you to Quinta do Seixo. Here you try some of the outstanding Port of the Sandeman firm.
Your ship today arrives into Porto. The capital of Northern Portugal, this wonderful city was once a departure point for adventurers across Europe who wished to travel to the New World. You take a guided tour of Porto, taking in many of the historical quarter's best sights including the grand Cathedral. Afterwards, you have a choice between two excursions. You can either take a walking tour of Porto, exploring the old harbour quarter. The tour is then followed by a Port wine tasting, a drink which takes its name from this very city. Or you could take a walk on the promenade and the glorious Atlantic seafront, stopping on your way for Portuguese coffee.
Later today, you visit Matosinhos, a coastal village where you enjoy a cooking demonstration of local Portuguese foods.
Today you disembark your ship and transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
