Follow the winding Rhine on this fantastic tour through central Europe. Explore the Swiss city of Basel before charting a course through the charming vineyards of northern Germany, pass briefly through France and end your exploration along the waterways of Amsterdam.
Your cruise begins with a flight to Basel, a beautiful Swiss city that stands at the point where Switzerland, France and Germany meet, or Zurich, known for its affluence. After transferring to your ship, you are welcomed on board with a drinks reception and a greeting from your Captain and crew. As you set sail this evening, enjoy the first of many sumptuous meals on board, with free-flowing quality wines, beers and soft drinks served at your table with both lunch and dinner each day.
This morning your ship arrives in Breisach, a fortified hill town at the Rhine's edge. You have the option to join one of two shore excursions. You could join a walking tour of Riquewihr, a picturesque wine-producing town filled with charming 16th-century buildings. Alternatively, you could take a combined walking tour of charming Breisach and historical Freiburg.
Today you have the opportunity to explore Strasbourg. The city has changed hands several times and both German and French influences can be seen in abundance. Enjoy a panoramic city tour, which takes you past the Orangery, the European Parliament and Place de la République, then discover the area known as 'La Petite France' on a walking tour which leads you to the city's Gothic cathedral.
Today your ship arrives in Mannheim, from where you are transferred by coach to historic Heidelberg, one of Germany's most attractive towns, famed for its venerable university and local chocolate production. The town lies below its protective castle on the River Neckar, dominating the view of Heidelberg's skyline. After falling into disrepair over the centuries, the castle has since been restored to its former glory, which you may choose to explore firsthand with your first excursion option today: a guided tour of the castle itself, from where the entire picturesque town can be viewed. Alternatively, you could choose to embark on a hike through the 'Philosopher's Walk', a steep yet scenic pathway into the hills surrounding the town, which offers panoramic views and a delightful woodland experience. The final option for the day is a visit to Speyer, a charming town with a famous Romanesque cathedral. The excursion here gives you chance to see the highlights of Speyer including its cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site that celebrated its 950th anniversary in 2011, and which is well known as the final resting place of eight German Emperors and Kings.
After your excursion, you are transferred back to your ship, which docks at Rüdesheim, one of the Rhine Valley's most scenic towns, this evening. Tonight you may choose to visit Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet, the town's museum for musical instruments, or enjoy a glass of alcoholic Rüdesheimer coffee, a local treat which is set alight for a theatrical effect, in a friendly café.
Rüdesheim is one of the Rhine Valley's most popular wine towns, and today you have three options for exploring its charms. Perhaps travel by gondola car over the vineyards, before disembarking for a tasting of local wines, choose to take a guided walk to Ehrenfel's Castle, or, if you're feeling particularly adventurous, join a guided bike ride through this beautiful town. After your chosen excursion, the ship departs Rüdesheim, sailing through the UNESCO-listed Rhine Gorge. Cruise past the timeless scenery of hilltop castles and the legendary Lorelei Rock, en-route to Koblenz, where the ship docks for the evening.
A guided walking tour of the town is included this evening, which you may choose to explore further at your leisure; perhaps take the Seilbahn across the river and up to the castle, for panoramic views of the town's shimmering lights as the night falls (payable locally).
Today is spent in the magnificent city of Cologne. It boasts many museums and Romanesque churches, and also a pleasant Old Town between the Alter Markt and the Rhine. Your options today include a walking tour of the city's historic streets, elegant squares and medieval churches, an energetic bike ride around the town, or a chance to sample local specialities and Kolsch beer - a popular choice.
You arrive in Amsterdam this afternoon, where you are given a photo opportunity at a typical Dutch windmill, before cruising along the city's canals on a fascinating tour that explores the hidden gems of Holland's capital. Pass many of the 17th-century merchant warehouses so characteristic of the city, cruising under several of the canal's bridges, before returning for a final dinner on board this evening.
You disembark today and are transferred to the airport for your flight to the UK.
