Amsterdam, like Venice, was founded on its waterways, and today, you experience the city's network of waterways, boarding a glasstopped boat for a scenic cruise that explores Amsterdam's main landmarks from the water. The canals of this excellent continental city are lined by Amsterdam's unique town houses and green boulevards.

Later this afternoon, transfer to a coach for the journey to Utrecht to see the iconic 'Rembrandt's Windmills' - one of the enduring images of rural Holland that has been made famous by the artist. These impressive buildings are built with large sails, wheeling peacefully in the gentle wind.

Days 3-4 Augustusburg Castle, Brühl
Augustusburg Castle, Brühl

Brühl and the Rhine Gorge

The ship arrives in Cologne this morning, heading south into the Rhineland, bound for the historic town of Brühl. Here, you embark on a fascinating excursion to the elegant Augustusburg Castle. Built by the archbishop Clemens August, the expansive estate is one of the country's best examples of German Rococo. After some free time here, we continue on to the similarly designed Falkenlust hunting lodge, which once provided German dignitaries with a luxurious place of residence when out hunting in the surrounding forests.

On Day 4, your journey continues through the breathtaking scenery of the Rhine Gorge. Dramatic valleys and rolling hills surround you on either shore as you meander along the river, floating past lush vineyards and alongside romantic castles and towns. You arrive in the town of Rüdesheim later today, fabled for its wine production. Here, you join the quaint Winzerexpress train through the town centre to Siegfreid's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, which charts the history of music boxes and mechanical musical instruments.

A grassy riverfront with manicured floral displays and charming red roofed houses make this a quintessential Rhine town.

You arrive in the city of Würzburg today, in Germany's Bavarian region and surrounded by verdant hills and charming farmsteads. The colourful city is full of rich Rococo architecture and brash Baroque buildings, such as the opulent and UNESCO listed Residenz. it also boasts a long history of artistic and musical flair, with an atmosphere that effortlessly blends the classical and the modern.

Here there is a guided tour, followed by free time to explore under your own steam. Würzburg is central to the Franconian wine industry, so perhaps visit one of the many wine taverns that this region is famous for. The area is known for the high mineralisation of the soil and this contributes to a unique viticultural identity, with most offering a dry, sharp taste.

This afternoon we visit the lovely town of Rothenburg, where we have a wonderful guided tour of the most visited city of Germany's Romantic Road. Half-wooded houses and cobblestones a definite highlight of Germany's romantic road. The Centre of the Käthe Wolfahrt Empire and Christmas museum (entrance fee included).
