Journey one-way along two of Europe's most important rivers on this awe-inspiring cruise. Follow the Rhine from Amsterdam to Cologne, meandering through the iconic Rhine Gorge before joining the Main and passing through the heartland of medieval Germany, all aboard a fabulous Travelmarvel vessel.
Fly to Amsterdam today, where on arrival in the iconic Dutch capital, you are transferred to your ship, either the Travelmarvel Diamond or Travelmarvel Jewel (departure dependant). After time to settle in, you will be greeted with a welcoming drink and an introduction to the Captain and crew, ahead of dinner this evening.
Amsterdam, like Venice, was founded on its waterways, and today, you experience the city's network of waterways, boarding a glasstopped boat for a scenic cruise that explores Amsterdam's main landmarks from the water. The canals of this excellent continental city are lined by Amsterdam's unique town houses and green boulevards.
Later this afternoon, transfer to a coach for the journey to Utrecht to see the iconic 'Rembrandt's Windmills' - one of the enduring images of rural Holland that has been made famous by the artist. These impressive buildings are built with large sails, wheeling peacefully in the gentle wind.
Back aboard our vessel this evening there is a Captain's Welcome Dinner with live entertainment.
The ship arrives in Cologne this morning, heading south into the Rhineland, bound for the historic town of Brühl. Here, you embark on a fascinating excursion to the elegant Augustusburg Castle. Built by the archbishop Clemens August, the expansive estate is one of the country's best examples of German Rococo. After some free time here, we continue on to the similarly designed Falkenlust hunting lodge, which once provided German dignitaries with a luxurious place of residence when out hunting in the surrounding forests.
On Day 4, your journey continues through the breathtaking scenery of the Rhine Gorge. Dramatic valleys and rolling hills surround you on either shore as you meander along the river, floating past lush vineyards and alongside romantic castles and towns. You arrive in the town of Rüdesheim later today, fabled for its wine production. Here, you join the quaint Winzerexpress train through the town centre to Siegfreid's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, which charts the history of music boxes and mechanical musical instruments.
Receive a special welcome from the locals today as the ship docks in Miltenberg, where you will be invited into the homes of some of the town's friendly residents. Here, you enjoy some coffee and traditional cakes, and learn about the area's culture and history in a charming setting. A grassy riverfront with manicured floral displays and charming red roofed houses make this a quintessential Rhine town.
You arrive in the city of Würzburg today, in Germany's Bavarian region and surrounded by verdant hills and charming farmsteads. The colourful city is full of rich Rococo architecture and brash Baroque buildings, such as the opulent and UNESCO listed Residenz. it also boasts a long history of artistic and musical flair, with an atmosphere that effortlessly blends the classical and the modern.
Here there is a guided tour, followed by free time to explore under your own steam. Würzburg is central to the Franconian wine industry, so perhaps visit one of the many wine taverns that this region is famous for. The area is known for the high mineralisation of the soil and this contributes to a unique viticultural identity, with most offering a dry, sharp taste.
This afternoon we visit the lovely town of Rothenburg, where we have a wonderful guided tour of the most visited city of Germany's Romantic Road. Half-wooded houses and cobblestones a definite highlight of Germany's romantic road. The Centre of the Käthe Wolfahrt Empire and Christmas museum (entrance fee included). Return to the ship by coach for our departure from Würzburg!
Cruise into Bamberg today, a town spread over seven hills and boasting UNESCO World Heritage status. Situated at the confluence of the Regnitz and Main rivers, medieval Bamberg is one of Germany's oldest and most visited towns.
Explore Bamberg on a guided tour, visiting some of the key sights including the impressive Romanesque Cathedral and its wealth of sculpture and the twin spires of Michaelsberg Abbey. Bamberg's ancient centre is rich in charming old timber-framed houses, such as the Altstadt and Rathaus buildings, giving the city a truly timeless feel.
Tonight we have a final dinner on board ship.
This morning you disembark your ship in Nuremberg where you are transferred to the airport for your flight home.
