On a quintessentially French cruise, discover the enchanting beauty of the iconic Seine River, beginning in Paris and taking in elegant châteaus, alabaster cliffs, ruined abbeys and sophisticated Norman cities.
You travel today from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord, where you are greeted by a coach to transfer you to your ship. On arrival, you are met by the crew with a cocktail to welcome you aboard before dinner. After your meal, experience a traditional Parisian cabaret evening as your ship embarks on its way down the Seine.
Your ship today takes you along the river towards Les Andelys. On our way through the pretty greenery of the French landscape, we pass the resplendent Château Roche Guyon, a stately home sat under the shadow of a castle tower from the 12th century. After lunch, we continue on to the Martainville Château. This marvellous mansion resembles a Disney palace, with pale bricks and a variety of rounded turrets. Originally built in the 15th century, Martainville Château is now a museum, dedicated to Norman arts and traditions through the ages.
Later tonight, you take dinner onboard as the ship makes its way to the picture-perfect region of Honfleur.
Having docked in Honfleur today, disembark and take a coach to Pont L'Évêque. Complete with half-timbered houses and cobbled streets, Pont L'Évêque is a delightful medieval town famous for its cheese. We enjoy a guided tour here, stopping at Pont L'Évêque's finest sights. Our tour takes us to the Dominican convent, which boasts wonderful manicured gardens, blooming with attractive flower ranges. Your tour also includes a tasting of the cheese, which holds the same name as the town. This soft cheese itself is famously rich, and is well worth a taste.
After our time here, we return to Honfleur to explore this beautiful town and its surrounding area. Characterised by its charming little natural harbour, populated by bobbing white sailing boats, Honfleur is a delight to discover thanks to its narrow streets and brightly coloured town houses. It's distinct charm is such that a number of France's impressionist artists such as Monet and Boudin used it as a muse and a model for their paintings. We take a tour through the alleys and squares, finishing outside the venerable Saint Léonard Church, a remarkable Gothic style building.
In the afternoon, take a walk along the stunning Côte d'Albâtre or the 'Alabaster Coast'. Seemingly shorn from the same rock as the Cliffs of Dover, these pure white cliffs offer magnificent views across the blue of the English Channel. The rock is actually alabaster limestone, and millions of years have shaped the rock into various imposing geological formations. The natural arches at Etretat are both impressive and beautiful, with the white jutting out against the grey sea and blue sky.
Today your ship makes its way to Duclair where you disembark in order to enjoy a guided tour of the excellent Norman Abbey Circuit, exploring the many ancient abbeys which were run by monks in the area. Many of these buildings are designed following a unique Norman style, as many were constructed in the 10th century during the height of the Norman dynasty. These ancient halls boast high arched ceilings and splendid stained-glass windows. We visit the fascinating Abbey of Saint Wandrille and the imposing Jumièges Abbey on our way. A Benedictine monastery still in operation today, the first stone of the Abbey of Saint Wandrille was laid around 650 AD.
In the afternoon, we take a guided tour of Rouen. An enchanting old medieval city, Rouen is known for its glorious cathedral known as the Notre Dame Cathedral as well as a 16th century astronomical clock on the Gros Horloge street. Rouen was the location of French Saint Joan of Arc's executions and we learn more about her during our tour.
Your morning today is spent cruising through some of the finest, most dramatic scenery which the Seine has to offer. You may wish to relax on the sun deck as we pass by the quaint village of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, the elegant town of Maison Laffitte and the romantic landscapes of the Val d'Oise province. The idyllic landscapes of the Seine are made up of classic postcard imagery of gentle green meadows, sleepy villages and adjoining waterways populated by rowing boats.
We arrive back into Paris around midday, to enjoy a panoramic tour of this iconic city. We take in all the classic sights including the magnificent Eiffel Tower, the glittering Champs-Élysées and the site of the Bastille. There is nowhere on earth with the combined romance and elegance of the French capital and this is evident in the indulgent shopping streets, plaza cafés and 19th century townhouses which line the boulevards.
